liminal series

2016 - 2020
Renee’s desire to freeze moments at the threshold of change gave birth to the liminal series in 2016. Relief style formations feel tangible, as if time has frozen just as a wash of paint were being poured carefully over the surface.
Paint pools, cracks, drips and rips, following the laws of gravity and matter. Layers of paint pile on top of one another, reflecting a build-up of experiences, while also eliciting topographical visions of Earth’s living, and every changing, surface.
“Geographic. Metamorphic. Layered. Decayed. Mountainous. Built up. Deconstructed. Abstract. Conceptual. The work of Renée Phillips is embodied by not one but each of the aforementioned descriptors. Layers are built up in monochromatic schemes or multiple pools of color poured one atop another highlighting an extensive understanding of the properties of paint and a skillful use of color.”
